| Description | King George V, on the right, in uniform and wearing a steel helmet. He is standing next to a man also in uniform. Both men have canes to steady themselves on this rough terrain. They are both surveying the surrounding area which has been badly ravaged by warfare. The ground is uneven and littered with debris, and the trees have been reduced to splintered stakes. Wytschaete was one of the areas captured by the Allies during the Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917). For the King to visit the Ridge, the area must have been secure at the time this photograph was taken. Members of royalty were kept well away from the fighting during their visits to the Front. The photograph's original caption reads, 'THE KING VISITS THE WESTERN FRONT. H.M. on Wytschaete Ridge.'] |
