| Description | At the bottom right corner of the photograph is the entrance to a trench. It doesn't look very deep and is supported by sandbags up its sides. The background is dominated by the side of a steep hill. This is gravelly and covered in little scrub bushes. Between the hill and the trench there are three rows of soldiers lined up. They are wearing their normal uniform but they have the addition of a huge and ungainly gas mask. This arresting picture was thought to have been taken by John Warwick Brooke. Gas attacks were a very real and terrifying threat for the men at the Front. Gas releasing weapons were developed during World War I and eventually became commonly used in attacks.
