| Description | A line of soldiers are standing in a shallow trench facing the camera. They are all leaning back on one leg with their arms stretched out- like a cricket throw- and in their back hand sits a grenade. The angle of the photograph means that the men are all fanned out and so it looks quite artistic. One of the soldiers is missing his cap but the rest are all wearing caps and light-coloured uniforms. They are mostly laughing at the camera or grinning cheekily. The countryside behind the men is flat and quite empty. It is thought that John Warwick Brooke took this photograph. Throwing a bomb would probably have been an alien action to most of the soldiers recruited into the army. As a result training and regular drilling were needed to make sure that most soldiers were efficient and successful. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT.
