| Description | Portuguese soldiers on an obstacle course, during World War I. This photograph was taken looking across fields which are covered in wild scrub grass. To either side of the image are two copses of trees. In the foreground there are a row of uniformed soldiers, some of whom are climbing up angled planks whilst others are already balanced on the straight plank and are ready to jump off the end. There are two other groups of soldiers one of which is standing in neat lines. John Warwick Brooke is believed to have taken this photograph. Competitions were not only a good way to test skills which had been learned but were also occasions for relaxation. They instilled a sense of pride and camaraderie and have always been a traditional part of military training. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT.
