| Description | Portuguese troops lined up for inspection. They are standing at the edge of a dry and dusty road, bordered by lush fields. All of the men are standing to attention, with their rifles positioned over their left shoulders. Making their way along the road, toward the camera, are three men on horseback. Two of the men on horseback hold back, while the man on the first horse inspects the troops. Portugal's entry into World War I, in 1916, was prompted by the seizure of German ships in waters off Lisbon. In direct response to this, on 16 March, Germany declared war on Portugal. The first Portuguese troops were sent to the Western Front in 1917, after receiving training from the British and French Military.
