| Description | All that is left of the church at Merville, France. The area in front of the church is covered with rubble and large chunks of masonry. Part of the outer wall remains, including a section of the steeple, providing a revealing glimpse of its former glory. A number of brick buildings in the foreground have also been badly damaged by the bombing or shelling, with little remaining upright. It is a bleak and depressing image thought to have been taken by the British official war photographer, John Warwick Brooke. A lot of French towns and villages experienced this level of destruction during World War I. It took many years for the rebuilding to be completed. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. All that is left of Merville Church which town we again occupy [sic].'] |
