| Description | The destruction and devastation at Merville, France. The brick buildings on the left have been damaged beyond repair, and the path running alongside is covered with bricks and rubble. The railway bridge across the river has collapsed. Planks of wood have been placed across the river, in two places, to form a temporary bridge. The caption suggests that the railway bridge was the main focus of this attack. After World War I, it took many years for France to recover from the devastation caused to much of its land and architecture. The damage was so extensive in some cases, whole towns and villages had to be completely rebuilt. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE.
