| Description | Queen Mary being introduced to hospital staff. They are standing outside in a courtyard surrounded by hospital buildings. According to the photograph's original caption, the two women standing in front of the Queen are the matron and matron-in-chief of the hospital. A crowd of uniformed men and nurses watch the proceedings. Royal visits to the Western Front were considered an important way of boosting morale, not only amongst the troops but also amongst hospital staff and the many others involved in war work.
