Late 15th-century manuscript of 'Il Ninfale fiesolano' by Giovanni Boccaccio
DescriptionThe manuscript was produced in Italy and contains 'Il Ninfale', or 'The Nymph of Fiesole', by Giovanni Boccaccio, written in ottava rima. The manuscript is the work of one scribe, written in an Italian round hand. The manuscript is not decorated except for an elaborate plain penwork initial on folio 1r with grapes and floral designs extending into the margin. The colour of the ink suggests that this decoration was added by a 16th-century hand that also appears elsewhere. The first letter of each stanza is in plain ink, slightly enlarged and placed in the margin.

Medieval and early modern manuscripts
DescriptionA selection of over 200 volumes of medieval and early modern manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 17th century. Some of Scotland's most important early manuscripts are included in the many Scottish volumes. These are complemented by interesting and significant works of international origin, including volumes from France, England, the Low Countries, Italy and a number of other countries. Most of the manuscripts were collected by the Advocates Library, the forerunner of the National Library of Scotland.
