68 NOTES
this is found in D (written in Cork, 1768) and B. D has 32 qq. and
B 33, both being defective at the end. In these two MSS. (D and B)
the poem is entitled Eachtra Dhonncha na mBó, which was evidently
suggested by the following quatrain which comes after 1. 32 in the
MSS. :—
NÍ ar mo cheól-sa atá locht
(truagh nach bhfuil mo chorp i gcré)
acht ortsa, a Dhonnchadh na mbó,
ós binne leat bró ná me.
In the present text I give 41 qq., the omissions being as follows :
I q. (the one just quoted) after 1. 32 ; i q. (which is the concluding q.
of the version in DB) after 1. 124 ; 5^ qq. after 1. 132 ; and 2 qq. after
1. 156. In the quatrains omitted after I. 132 there is reference to, inter
aha, a place called Leacán (perhaps Lackan in Co. Down), and persons
named Domhnall Donnchadh '5 an da Mhaol, clann Váitétr, and clann
Taidhg.
MS. Readings. I have ventured silently to make the following
changes : ariamh to riamh ; tá to atá ; a bheith to bheith ; a bhios (rel.)
to bhios ; le mo to km ; pun to port ; uirid to uiread. One cannot,
however, be sure but that some of these rejected forms were used by
the author. I have retained the MS. sinnim {<seinnim). H and F
