Letter from Cameron, youmjer of Lochiel, under the signature of " Diiu,'
to the Chevalier de St Georr/c.
Sir, — I had the honor to write to your Royal Highness sometime ago in a
passport sent by Mr Barclay, which, could an opportunity have been got, would
have gone much sooner, and now may, to the manner of conveyance, prove more
tedious than we imagined. I lay hold on the present occasion, to assure your
Royal Highness of my steady adherence to whatever may conduce to the inter-
est of your family, and at the same time to observe, tliat as the season is now
fast advancing, and we (two words torn away) as yet no return from otir neigh-
bour, (two words torn away,) the so of England, I humbly beg leave to pro-
pose to yotir Royal Highness how far it is not necessary that we be informed
of what is to be expected from the French, and in how soon, from whicli we
may have it in our power to settle matters so, as will enable us to make that
assistance to your Royal Highness our duty and inclination direct. It niav
seem unnecessary, as Mr Barclay is to write, to give your Royal Highness the
trouble of this letter ; but as we are all cast to any, (word here illegible,) I could
not get by it.

Ce n'est que depuis pen de jours que J'ai appris a mon grand etonnement que
mon fils est actuellment parti des cotes de France, pourse rendre en Eccosse.
11 a pris et execute cette resolution sans me consulter, sachant bien, que je n'aurois
jamais approuve qu'il fit une telle demarche, sur tout, a, I'iuscu de votre Majeste.
Je I'ai done ignor^ absolument, mais etant faite, je vous avoue sinc^rement que
je ne scaurai m'empecher do I'admirer. 11 me mande d'avoir icrit lui meme a
votre Majesty en partant, et quoique je ne pretende point excuser sou silence
envers votre Majeste auparavant, je m'assure qu'elle force moins d'attention a
un pareil manquement qu'au courage et aux sentiments qui le fontagir: ei
qu'elle voudra bien le croire d'autant plus digne de son amitie et de sa protec-
tion qu'il tache d'imiter son cxemple, et de suivre ses traces en affrontant Ics
plus grands perils pour arrivcr h I'accomplissments de ses justes desseiiis. 11 est
certain que sa conduite presente fera une grande impression sur I'esprit de ses
compatriotes, et que je ne regarderois pas comme tout a fait- impossible qu'il
puisse rSussir sans secours etrangers. Mais cela seroit de ses ivenements extra-
ordinaires sur lesquelles il ne fiuit pas eonter: et je croyerois tenter la piovi
