(a) Ossian dirige la parola aà uno de' primi cristiani sta-
biliti in Scozia. Di loro còsi il Bucanano nel. 1. 4. e. 46. Mul-
ti ex Brittonihus christiani, savitiam Diocletiani timentes ,
ad eos confugerant ; e quibus complures , doctrina et vitae
integritate clarì in Scotta substiterunt ^ vitamque solita-
fiam tanta sanctitatis opinione apud omnes vixerunt, ut vi-
ta functorum cellae in tempia commutarentur: exeoque con-
suetudo mansit apud posteros, ut prisci Scoti tempia cellas
vocent . Hoc genus monachorum Culdeos appellabant .
{b) I canti del Culdeo saranno i salmi, e gl'inni religiosi
in lode dei santi del cristianesimo. Il poeta rapportando tutto
alle sue idee, li cliiama spìriti del vento.
