Mails for the Orkney Islands.
6. The mails are despatched daily (excepting Sundays) from Thurso in Caithness at 10 a.m.,
returning from Stromness at 5.30 a.m., and Kirkwall (Scapa) at 7 a.m. The despatch from
Stromness is at 4 p.m., and from Thurso at 8.30 p.m. during the months of May, June, July,
August, and September.
Mails for the Shetland Islands.
7. Mails to and from the Shetland Islands are conveyed from Aberdeen every Monday
and Friday evening, arriving at Ler-wick on Wednesday and Sunday mornings ; and return-
ing from Lerwick to Aberdeen every Monday and Wednesday at 6 and 10 p.m. alternately.^
There is a third weekly mail leaving Aberdeen on Wednesday evening, and returning from Shet*^
land on Friday at 6 and 10 p.m. alternately during the summer months from May to September.
Mails for Skye and the Hebrides.
8. The Skye mails are conveyed daily (Sundays excepted) by steamer from the railway
terminus at Strome Ferry, six days a week during the months of July, August, and September,
and three days a week during the remainder of the year ; they are forwarded by mail cart from
Strome Ferry on the other three days. The mails for North Uist and part of Benbecula are
conveyed between Dunvegan (Skye) and Lochmaddy (North Uist) by sailing packet daily (Sundays
excepted) throughout the year.
Mails to and from the Island of Lewis are conveyed betAveen Strome Ferry and Stornoway on
week days from 1st April to 30th September, and three daj's a week during the remainder of the
year. In winter the steamer leaves Stornoway on Monday, Wednesdaj^, and Friday mornings,
returning on the alternate days.
Mails for Coll, Tiree, Barra, South Uist, and Benbecula,
9. The mails for these Islands leave Oban at 7.30 A.M. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
from 1st September until 15th May, and at 1.15 p.m. during the remainder of the year, returning
to Oban on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, all the year round.
III.— RATES OF POSTAGE, AND CONDITIONS OF TRANSMISSION.
Inland Letters.
10. The prepaid rates of postage are as follows, viz.- :
For a letter not exceeding 1 oz. . . . . Id.
,, exceeding 1 oz. but not exceeding 2 oz. 1^1.
2 oz. ,, ,, 4 oz. 2d.
4 oz. ,, ,, 6 oz. 2id.
6 oz. ,, ,, 8 oz. 3d.

and so on at the rate of |d. for every additional 2 oz.
A letter posted unpaid is chargeable on delivery with double postage ; and a letter posted
insufBciently prepaid is chargeable with double the deficiency. On re-directed letters the charge
for re-direction (an additional postage at the prepaid rate) is the same whether prepaid or collected
on delivery.
No letter may exceed the dimensions of 18 inches in length, 9 inches in width, or 6 inches
in depth, unless it be sent to or from a Government Office.
Colonial and Foreign Letters.
^ 11. For the rates on these letters, reference is recommended to be made to the Post Office
Guide, published quarterly by command of the Postmaster-General, price 6d.
12. All newspapers registered at the General Post Office, London, printed and published in
the United Kingdom, at intervals not exceeding seven days, may be sent by post, singly
or in a packet, within the United Kingdom, for a postage of one halfpenny for each newspaper,
prepaid either by an adhesive stamp or by the use of a stamped wi-apper. A packet containing
two or more registered newspapers is not chargeable with a higher rate of postage than that
chargeable on a book packet of tlie same weight. A newspaper posted unpaid, and a packet
