pensary was established, under the patronage of
Lord Douglas, one of the principal benefactors :
which is now united to the infirmary, where the poor
receive medicines gratuitously, by presenting a re-
cipe from the attendant physician. A Lunatic Asy-
lum also has lately been built, a little to the northward
of the town : it is a very handsome building, and,
it is expected, will be soon ready for the reception
of patients. A spirit for literature and education
manifests itself in Dundee; for, besides the public
grammar school, and the English schools, which
are well supplied with good teachers, there is esta-
blished an Academy, or rather College, for mathe-
matics, the French and Italian languages, and the
polit'i arts ; with proper professoi a in the different
branches, and a large apparatus for natural and ex-
perimental philosophy. Most of the streets of Dun-
dee are neat, and the houses well built, but the new
streets are spacious and elegant. The town is well
supplied with water, many families having draw-
wells on their ov/n property, and every street having
a public well of excellent water conveyed in leaden
pipes. The harbour is advantageously situated for
trade, admitting easily trading vessels of the greatest
burden ; and when finished according to the present
plan, vs^ill be one of the first in Scotland. The Tay,
opposite to Dundee, is about two and a half miles
broad, and being sheltered by the high lands on each
side, affords a safe road to vessels of any burden,
where they may lie at anchor till the tide admits
them into the harbour. Close by the quay, there
are three large public warehouses, besides nu-
merous warehouses belonging to individuals The
principal and staple manufacture is linen, of various
kinds : osnaburghs and other coarse linens, for fo-
