SHIELDHILL and BLACK-
BRAES constitute a quoad sacra
parish, formed from Polmont and Muir-
avonside civil parishes (now amalgamated
with Grangemouth parish), and is equi-
distant 2J miles from Falkirk and Pol-
mont stations on the Caledonian and North
British railways, and from Avonbridge sta-
tion on the Coatbridge and Manuel line of
the North British railway. The Estab-
lished church at California, in the centre
of the parish, is a plain edifice of stone,
and has upwards of 150 sittings. In the
