BRIDGE OF ALLAN is a popular
watering place on the river Allan, about
i£ miles from its confluence with the
Forth, and nearly at the western ex-
tremity of the Ochill hills. It is a police
burgh and quoad sacra parish erected from
Logie civil parish, with a station on the
Oban and Stirling section of the Cale
tdonian railway, and is 1£ miles north from
Causewayhead station, which is in the
parish, on the Stirling and Edinburgh line
*of the North British railway, and is 3
north from Stirling, 13 north-by-west from
Falkirk, and about 8 north-west from
Alloa. The bridge from which the town
takes its name crosses the river Allan
near the entrance to the burgh. In 1871,
Bridge of Allan was made a burgh under
the provisions of the Lindsay Act ; its
municipal affairs are managed by a Town
-Council of nine commissioners, who elect
a provost and two bailies under the " Burgh
Police (Scotland) Act, 1892." The higher
part of the town in the neighbourhood of
the wells and Coneyhill is of considerable
-elevation, forming a terrace or plateau,
on which many villas are erected, the
sloping sides of the hill, adorned with
trees command a series of views, includ-
ing Stirling and its castle and carse,
watered by the Forth, Teith and Allan,
with other objects. This place is resorted
to as well for pleasure as on account of
the mildness and salubrity of the climate,
-*he beauty of the surrounding scenery,
and the fame of its saline mineral waters,
which are in the higher village, within a
few minutes' walk from the centre of the
town; these springs, regarded as the chief
saline waters in Scotland, contain 47£
grains of common salt in 16oz. and a
nearly similar amount of muriate of lime.
Prior to the discovery of the springs, the
place was comparatively little known, but
there are now many well-built houses and
â– villas, and several hotelB, including the
Hydropathic Establishment, the Royal
-Hotel, the Queen's Hotel and Carmichael's
Temperance Hotel. In the burgh are
Teading rooms, a library, the M'Farlane
gallery of sculpture and pictures and two
bowling greens. Airthrey Castle is the seat
.of Mrs. Graham. Keir Gardens is now
the property and residence of Capt. Archi-
bald Stirling. Westerton, the property of
the trustees of the late General Sir James
E. Alexander K.C.B. is now (1903) occu-
pied by Robert McKenzie esq. Both these
are open once a week to the public, and
there are also several miles of good
angling, a good golf course and public
tennis courtB. The " Strathallan Meeting "
for Scottish athletic games is held annually
â– on the first Saturday of August, in the
-public park, at the east end of the village.
Among the business establishments are
large cotton manufacturing works and a
â– paper manufactory. The lords and lady of
the manor are the trustees of the late
General Sir James E. Alexander K.C.B.
and Mrs. Graham, of Airthrey Castle. The
â– area of the burgh is 774 acres; rateable
value, £24,937; population of Bridge of
Allan in 1891, 3,207, and in 1901, 3,240;
STIRLINGSHIRE.
ecclesiastical population in 1891, 2,690, and
in 1901, 2,777.
