CARSTAIRS is a parish and small vil-
lage, in the Upper ward, small debts court
district of Lanark, on the road from Edin-
burgh to Lanark, about a mile east from
Carstairs Junction on the Caledonian rail-
way, 4 north-east from Lanark and 3 west
of Carnwath. The Mouse water flows through
the centre of the parish, which is bounded
on the east by Carnwath parish, south by
the river Clyde, west by Lanark and Car-
luke parishes. The three fairs formerly held
here, having gradually declined, are now
altogether discontinued. From the numDer
and magnitude of the architectural and othei;
Roman remains which have been discovered
here, it is assumed that the place must have
been one' of importance during the Roman
period. Carstairs House is the seat of
Sir James Kling bart D.L., J.P. The prin-
cipal landowners are Sir James King bart.
William EliofVLockhart esq. of Cleghorn,
Col. Sir Simon Macdonald Lockhart bart.
