LANARKSHIRE.
[slater's
CAMWATH is a parish, small town
and burgh of barony, on the main road
between Lanark and Edinburgh, with a sta-
tion on the Edinburgh and Carstairs sec-
tion of the Caledonian railway, and is in
the Upper ward, and the small debts court
district of Lanark, 25 miles south-south-
west from Edinburgh, 30 south-east from
Glasgow, 7 north-west from Biggar, and
the same distance east from Lanark. It
consists of one street, nearly three-quarters
<of a mile in length, in the middle of which
stands the tolbooth, a plain old building,
and in front of it an obelisk, on which the
-distances from Edinburgh to various places
in Clydesdale and Ayrshire are indicated.
This place, since 1628, has given the title
â– of Earl to the Dalzell family; the peerage
was forfeited by the 6th Earl, in 1715, but
•was restored in 1826 to Robert Alex. Dal
•sell, who then became 7th Earl of Cam
â– wath. Col. Sir Simon Macdonald Lockhart
hart. M.T.O. of Lee and Carnwath, is
superior of the burgh. The estate is held
of the Crown, on payment of a pair of
Ted hose, which are run for annually
on the day succeeding the August
fair, and followed by athletic games,
to the successful competitors for superiority
in which are awarded medals and prizes in
money. The remains of the ancient church
stand at the west end of the town, and a
-portion of the building is used as a sepulchre
for the Lockhart family; it contains the
Temains of the Somervilies, former lords of
the manor, and includes a tomb of the 15th
•century, with the effigy of one of these in
•complete armour, and another of his wife in
•the costume of the period. Close to Carn-
wath House and adjoining the Gallows'
Hill is an old sepulchral mound. The
-present church, erected in 1866, on the site
• of the former one, erected about 1798, is]
a building of freestone, in the Gothic style,
and will seat 1,000 persons. Fairs, now
almost extinct, are held on the 24th
"Februarv (new style), for hiring, and the
'Friday before the 31st of October, for hir-
ing servants. About a mile to the north-
west of Carnwath are the scattered ruins
•of Cowthallv Castle, in former ages the seat
of the Somervilies. Carnwath House is the
•seat of Col. Sir Simon Macdonald Lockhart
bart. M.V.O., D.L., J.P. In one of the
rooms here Prince Charles Edward remained
for two entire days on his retreat from
Derby to Culloden in 1746. Kersewell is
the residence of William Bertram esq.
D.L.. J.P. and Westsidewood, of James
Williamson esq. D.L., J.P. The principal
landowners are Col. Sir Simon Macdonald
Lockhart bart. of Lee, James Williamson
esq. sf West Sidewood, William Bertram
esq. of Kersewell, Robert I. Logan esq.
J.P. of Newmains, David Spiers Fraser
esq. of East Shield, James Hamilton esq.
of Woolfords, and John Purdie-Somerville
esq. of Ampherlaw. The parish is bounded
the east by Dunsyre parish, north by
Edinburghshire, west by the Mouse river,
and south by the river Medwin. Auchen-
gray, 6 miles north-east of Carnwath, is a
village with a station on the Caledonian
railway. Braehead is a village 3 miles
north.
Haywood and Wilsontown are also villages,
the latter being 6 miles north from Carn-
wath ; both have a station on a branch of
the Caledonian railway. The population of
Havwood in 1801 was 1,206, and in 1901.
995'; of Wilsontown in 1891 was 651, and
in 1901, 695. The civil parish embraces an
area of 30,468 acres; rateable value
£33,894; the population in 1891 was 5,324
and in 1901, 5,837, and in the ecclesiastical
parish, 3,798.
