KIZ^NEFF, with which is incorporated
the abrogated parish of Catterline, lies on
foe sea coast south from Dunnottar, and is
bounded by Arbuthnott on the west and
Bervie on the south. It is in Kincardine-
shire poor combination, and extends from
the Water of Bervie to the northern point,
about 5 miles along the coast, which is
exceedingly bold and rocky. Upon the
margin of the sea, not above 100 yards dis-
tance from the church, are the ruins of a
castle. The old castle of Fiddes, also in
this parish, and in a good state of preser-
vation, is famous as the scene of the legend
of Thrummy Cap; a poem written in broad
Scotch, in 1796, by John Burness, a cousin
of Robert Burns. A lighthouse was erected
on Tod Head in 1897. At Catterline there
is an Episcopal church, in connection with
which there is a good school. In Kinneff
church the regalia of Scotland were de-
posited, from 1651 to the Revolution : being
ingeniously conveyed out of the Castle of
Dunnottar, while besieged by General Lam-
bert, by Mrs. Grainger, wife of the incum-
bent of the parish, and her servant girl,
and secreted under the flooring of the
church, beneath the pulpit. The area is
7,130 acres; rateable value. £7,072, and
contained in 1891 a population numbering
907. and in 1901 899.

LAURENCEKIRK, the capital of its
parish and the chief town of the Howe, is
a thriving burgh, 93 miles north-by-east
from Edinburgh, 10 north from Montrose
and 14 south-west from Stonehaven,
situated on the main road from Perth to
Aberdeen, and has a station on the Cale-
donian railway. A sheriff small debt
court is held three times a year, and the
parish is in Kincardineshire poor combina-
tion. Formerly a mere hamlet, seated
amidst an uncultivated tract of country,
it is indebted for the consequence it en-
joys at the present day to Lord Garden-
stone, a judge of the court of session, who,
in the year 1772, took it under his foster-
ing care and patronage. In 1779 he pro-
cured for the place the privileges of a
burgh and barony, with the right of hold-
ing a weekly market. The town contains
a main street nearly a mile in length,
another parallel to it, and several smaller
streets branching from these, the whole
being well lighted with gas. It is
governed by a burgh council and police
commission, consisting of 9 members. A
police court has been established and is
held when occasion requires. Branches of
the Town and County Bank Limited and
the North of Scotland Bank Limited are
established here and there is also a Savings
Bank. The parish, formerly called " Con-
veth," is 4 miles in length and 3 at its
greatest breadth. A ridee of hills stretches
through the whole extent, from east to
west, sloping gradually to the Dorth and.
south ; the small river Luther passes
through the district and numerous brooks
intersect it. The name Laurencekirk is
derived from the dedication of the old
church to St. Laurence. In 1865 a public
hall was erected by subscription, at a cost)
of some £1,400, called St. Laurence Hall.
There is a brewery here, and an extensive
cattle auction mart. Fairs are held on the
last Wednesday in January (St. Anthony's
fair — old stvle). and cattle fairs on the first
Thursdav in Julv (St. James's fair— old
