BERVIE (or Inverbervie, as it is fre-
quently written) is a royal burgh, the
capital of its parish, and chief town for
many miles, in Kincardineshire poor com-
bination, and is a railway station on the
Montrose and Bervie section of the North
British line (there ia also a station on the
same line in the village of Gourdon) ; it is
13 mile3 north-by-east from Montrose, 10
6outh-by-west from Stonehaven and 25
south-by-west from Aberdeen, on the coast
road from the last-named city to Dundee,
and at the mouth of the Bervie, here
crossed by a bridge of a single span of 103
feet. At the mouth of the river is a small
basin, which opens into an extensive bay,
navigable for vessels almost at any time.
The principal trade of the town is the
spinning of flax. The river is a fine
stream, and in the driest season always
has an abundance of water. The town is
well lighted with gas, and the electric
light has also been introduced into several
of the public works. Bervie was consti-
tuted a royal burgh by charter from King
David II. as a return for the kindness and
hospitality with which he was received
by the poor inhabitants, when he was
forced in here by stress of weather, and the
spot where he landed is still called Craig
David. James VI. renewed the charter,
confirming all the privileges and immu-
nities granted by King David. The burgh
is governed by a provost, two bailies, a
dean of guild, a treasurer, and nine coun-
cillors. Together with Montrose, Arbroath,
Brechin and Forfar, it forms the Mont-
rose parliamentary district, constituted
under the " Reform Act " of 1832, and
returning one member. The sheriff small
debt court, which used to be held ir
Bervie, is now removed to Stonehaven
Registration courts are still held once a
year. There is a church of the Establish
ment and a United Free Church. The
weekly market for grain is held on Wed'
nesday, and the annual fair on the Thursday
before the 19th of May. Gourdon is a fish-
ing village, one mile from Bervie, and in
1901 contained a population of 1,197. The
parish of Bervie comprises an area of
2,332 statute acres; rateable value: land-
ward, £3,281; burgh, £3,497; and its
population was in 1901, £2,523 ; of this
number 1,207 were returned for the parlia-
mentary burgh. The number of electors
on the parliamentary register in 1903 was
201.
