GLEN IS LA is a parish in the north-west
of the county, extending 20 miles from north
to south and about 6 in breadth ; it is bound-
ed on the west and south-west by Perth-
shire and on the east by the parishes of
Cortachy, Kirriemuir and Lintrathen. The
river Isla flows, down the centre of the
parish, and the kirktown stands on the
left bank of this river, 10 miles north
from Alyth. The parish is in the poor
combination of Dundee and small debt
court district of Forfar. The district is
mountainous, and in the northern portion
contains the large deer forest of Caan-
lochan, near Fulchan. About 4 miles
north-west of the village are the ruins
of Forten Castle, belonging to the Ogilvies,
and destroyed by Argyll in 1640. A
market is held on the Thursday before
the last Wednesday in September. The
tutors of the Earl of Airlie (a minor) are
the principal landowners. The area com-
prises 41,242 acres; rateable value, £9,555;
the population in 1891 was 676, 1901, 669
civil and 4,090 ecclesiastical.

GUTHRIE is a parish 8 miles north-west
of Arbroath, and bounded on the north by
the parishes of Kirkden and Kinnell anci
south by Dunnichen ; it is in the small debt
court district of Forfar, from which tha
kirktown is distant 7 mliles east-by-north,
and has a station on the Forfar and Mont-
rose section of the Caledonian railway. The
land slopes from the hill of Guthrie to the
suuth and south-east, a part only being
arable. Prior to the Reformation this parish
had a collegiate church, with a provost and
three prebendaries. Guthrie Caatle is the
seat of Capt. John Douglas Maude Guthrie
D.L. who is the principal landowner. The
area comprises 3,832 acres; rateable value,
£3,151; the population in 1891 was 402;
and in 1901 was 264, 28 civil and 374
ecclesiastical.
