GLAMIS.
who, on marrying the king's second daugh-
ter.became the founder of the family of Lyon
(now Bowes-Lyon), Earls of Strathmore,
the eldest son of which bears the courtesy
title of Lord Glamis : on the conviction and
execution of the young and beautiful Lady
Glamis for witchcraft, in 1537, the castle
once more became royal property, and a
residence of James V., but was afterwards
restored to the family : it contains a valuable
collection of pictures. Near the castle,
on a pedestal, stand the figures of four lions
rampant, life . size, each holding a dial in
the fore paw; from their heads rises a
huge mass of stone, something like a pine-
apple in shape, with the protuberances upon
it formed into dials, making in all eighty-
four. In the manse garden stands a large
stone obelisk, with carvings said to mark
King Malcolm's grave. In the village is a
Masonic Hall, which is also used for lec-
tures and other purposes. Fairs are held
on the first Wednesday in April, first
Wednesday in May, first Wednesday after
the 26th 'of May, "first Saturday after the
28th of October and first Wednesday after
the 22nd of November. The Earl of Strath-
more and Kinghorne is the principal land-
owner. The area comprises 14,267 acres ;i
rateable value, £13,883; the population in
1891 was 1,464, and in 1901, 1,351.
Charleston is a small village in the parish.
Charleston and Glen Ogilvie abound with
very valuable stone.
