MARKINCH is a parish extending a

caldy and Dysart and small debt court
district of Kirkcaldy, and bounded north
by Kettle, east by Kennoway, south by
Dysart and Wemyss, and west by King-

and on the highest part is seated the

bleachfields and a woollen manufactory.
The districts round abound in coal. In the
pillage there are branches of the Commer-
cial Bank of Scotland Limited, and of the
Royal Bank of Scotland. There is a town
hall. The Municipal Buildings, erected
in 1899, were the gift of Edward Balfour
esq. of Balbirnie. The places of worship
include a church of the Establishment and
United Free churches. The parish is
traversed by the streams of the Leven and
the Orr, and the great road through the
country crosses it. The North British
railway is carried over the first-named
river by means of a viaduct of ten arches,
nearly 90 feet in height. Balgonie Castle,
the property of Charles Barrington Bal-
four esq. of Newton Don, but now a ruin,
is of great antiquity ; it stands on the
south bank of the Leven, in the midst of
some finely-wooded grounds. About half
a mile to the east is Balfour House, the
property of Charles Barrington Balfour
esq. and now (1903) occupied by George
J. Lumsden esq. Balbirnie, an elegant
mansion, is the 6eat of Edward Balfour
esq. D.L., J.P. and lies about half a mile
