LIMEKILN'S, with the creek of
Brucehaven, forms a small harbour on the
north bank of the Firth of Forth, in the
parish of Dunfermline and parliamentary
division of West Fife, 4 miles west from
North Queensferry.and 3 south of Dunferm-
line town. The adjoining village of Charles-
town forms a part of the port, and contains
a station on the Dunfermline and Charles-
town branch of the North British railway,
opened for passenger traffic, l?t September,
1894. There is a fhipbuilding yard at
Rrucehaven, and at Charlestown, which is
the property of the Earl of Elgin, and con-
tains a harbour formed by him, but now
owned by the North Br'tL-h Railway Co.
large quantities of coal and lime are
shipped; there are also two salt works and
an iron foundry. The population in 1901
was Charlestown 750, Limekilns 552, and
in 1891 the ficures were 673 nod 582.

LOCHGELLY.

LOCHGrELLY is a town, ecclesias-
tical parish formed from Auchterderran
and Ballingry, and police burgh partly in
the parish of Auchterderran with a small
portion in the parish of Ballingry, and
has a station on the Thornton and Dun-
fermline section of the North British rail-
way, 7 miles west from Kirkcaldy, 8 north-
east from Dunfermline, and 6 north from
Burntisland. The works and offices of the
Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Limited are
here, and at the works are four furnaces
for smelting, but they have not been in
use for several years. A branch of the
Union Bank of Scotland Limited is estab-
lished here. The inhabitants are chiefly
employed in coal mining. The ruins of
Lochore Castle are about a mile distant.
The area of the burgh is 278 acres; gross
valuation £12,145 ; the population in 1891
was 4,133 and in 1901, 5,472 burgh ; ecclesi-
astical parish, 8,496.
