formerly the residence of the Earls of
Dysart, is the seat of Michael B. Nairn
esq. J.P. The area of the burgh is 238
acres; rateable value (including part of
Kirkcaldy), £60,129; the population in
1901 was 16,019, including 3,539 in the
royal burgh of Dysart and 11,733 in the
royal burgh of Kirkcaldy; the population
of the parish in 1891 was 13,626, of whom
3,022 were in Dysart burgh.
The number of electors in the parlia-
mentary register in 1903 was 2,779.

EARLSFERRY, a royal burgh, for-
merly in the parish of Kilconquhar, but
transferred on 15th May, 1891, to that of
Elie, lies at the head of Elie bay, in the
civil parish of that name, which adjoins
Earleferry and is the nearest railway sta-
tion and post office, Elie possessing the
harbour. The royal burgh, which is in
the small debt court district of Anstruther,
is 13 miles south-east from St. Andrews
and 5 east from Largo, and remains in the
ecclesiastical parish of Kilconquhar. The
date of its erection into a royal burgh is
uncertain, as its earliest charter was
destroyed by a fire in Edinburgh. A new
one was in consequence granted by James
IV. by which all its ancient privileges
were renewed and confirmed ; it is
