TEMPLE is a parish and village, in Dal-
keith poor combination and small debt
court district; the parish is bounded on the
east by Borthwlck, on the south by Heriot,
on the west by Edleston and Penicuick, and
on the north by Carrington. The village,
situated on rising ground on the banks of
the Gladhouse water, which falls into the
South Esk, is about 10 miles south from
Edinburgh and 3 miles from Gorebridge
(the nearest) station on the North British
railway. The land is chiefly hilly, but con-

tains a good deal of moor and pasture land.
The old church, an edifice in the Gothic
style and now in ruins, was founded by
King David I. for the Knights Templars";
the new church, also in the Gothic style,
was built in 1830. Sir Robert Dundas bart.
of Arniston House, is the principal land-
owner. The area comprises 13,633 acres;
rateable value, £10,923 ; the population
in 1891 was 1,646, reduced by the transfer
of 1,191 persona to Borthwick parish, to
â– 155, and in 1901, 385.
