STOW is an extensive parish and village
in the southern extremity of the county,
nearly 16 miles in length and 8 broad; it is
partly in Selkirkshire, and in Dalkeith
poor combination and small debt court dis-
trict. The village is 24 miles south-east
from Edinburgh and has a station on the
North British railway. The village is well
lighted with gas, supplied by the Stow
Gaslight Company. An augmented water
supply has been provided from Sell Moor
hill, at a cost of over £1,200, the villages
of Stow and Killochyett having been con-
stituted a special district alike for water
supply and drainage. The Town Hall is
in part devoted to a literary institute and
library, and also includes a large room for
lectures and public meetings. There are
two woollen manufactories here. Hiringa
for servants are held on Friday before the
last Monday in February and the second
Tuesday in March. The fast days are Wed-
nesday before the first Sunday of May and
the second Sunday of November. Caitha
is a small hamlet in this parish, 4 miles
sodth-by-west from Stow village and near
the Bowland station on the North British
railway. Fountainhall is also a hamlet im
this parish, about 4 miles north-north-west
from Stow village, with a station on the
North British railway. Bowland is the
residence of William Ramsay esq. J. P. ;i
Crookston, of John Borthwick esq. J.P.
and Torsonce House, of Miss Milroy;
Ashiestiel was the residence of the late Sir
Walter Scott, previous to his removal to
Abbotsford. Laidlawstiel is the property
of Lady Reay. The area comprises 26,138
acres; rateable value, £8,922; the popula-
tion in 1901 was 1,560 in the civil parish,
1,656 in the ecclesiastical parish (the latter
extending into Selkirkshire), and 557 in the
village (including Killochyett).
The portions of Hangingshaw and Kirk-
lands farms, including the hamlet of Stage-
bank, within the parish of Stow, were
transferred to Heriot, for all purposes, Dec.
6, 1898, by the Secretary for Scotland's
Order, No. 34, dated Dec. 17. 1897.
