ARDG-OTTR is a civil parish and vil-
lage on the shore of Loch Linnhe, with a
pier for steamers, 9 miles south from Fort
William station on the North British rail-
way and 3 west from Ballachulish. There is
a reading and recreation room in the vil-
lage. The old seat of the Macleans, Ard
gour House, is about 1 mile west of the
pier of Ardgour and near to the village of
Clovullin. At Corran Ferry, where Loch
Linnhe narrows to a quarter of a mile in
breadth, a lighthou:e has been elected. Ben
ARGYLLSHIRE.
Nevis is distinctly seen from here, and to
the right there is a magnificent view of
Glencoe.
Kingairloch is a small village in the
parish of Ardgour, and situated 16 miles
south-west from A rdgour ; it contains an
Established church, school, and granite
quarries.
The Earl of Morton, Conaglen House;
Alexander H. MacLean esq. and Herbert
Strutt esq. of Kingairloch, are the principal
landowners. The area of the parish is
HO, 600 acres; rateable value, £4,848; the
population of the civil parish in 1891 was
757, and in 1901, 547, and of the eccle-
siastical, 470.

ARDNAMURCHAN is a parish and
hamlet at the north-western extremity of
the county, in the poor combination of
Mull, and. extends 26 miles from east to
west by 7 in hreadth ; it ib bounded by Loch
Sunart on the south, Ardgour on the east
and the sea on the north and west, and its
coast is considered dangerous, the Atlantic
breaking with full force on Ardnamurchan
point, which lies exposed between the
Islands of Rum and Coll. Upon the point
a lighthouse has been erected by the Com-
missioners of Northern lights, which is of
great service to navigation. Dorlin House,
the residence of Lord Howard of Glossop,
is situated at Salen, a hamlet in this parish,
north of Loch Sunart. The village of
Strontian is in the quoad sacra parish of
Strontian, partly in this parish and partly
in Morven, at the head of Loch Sunart.
This place is about 20 miles south-west
from Fort William station on the West
[slater's
Highland railway. At Strontian fairs are
held in May on Thursday before last Wed-
nesday; June, on Friday after third Thurs-
day (O.S.); August, for lambs, on Wednes-
day if 12th, if not, following Wednesday;
and. October, on Thursday before la3t
Wednesday. Kilchoan, near which are the
ruins of Mingary Castle, is a village near
the entrance to Loch Sunart. Arisaig is a
small hamlet on a little harbour of sams
name on the west coast of Inverness-shire,
35 miles west of Bannavie. The soil of the
parish is sterile, but feeds large flocks of
sheep and some cattle, and the hills are
statea to be rich in minerals. The land
from Acharacle to Ardnamurchan belongs
to Charles Dunell Rudd esq. of Castle Glen-
borrodale. The area of the entire parish
comprises 109,402 acres; rateable value,
£8,000; population in 1891 was 3,636, and
In 1901, 1,952. The ecclesiastical parish of
Strontian had a population in 1901 of 566;
in Ardnamurchan in 1901, 1,914.
