APPIN", or Port Appin, is a village on
the shore of Loch Linnhe, 12 miles north
from Oban and 35 north-west of Inveraray,
in the united parish of Lismore and Appin
and the poor combination of Lome. There
is a ferry here to Lismore island. The
nearest railway station is at Appin, 3
miles distant, on the Callander and BaJla-
chulish branch of the Caledonian line,
and there is communication by steamer
from Glasgow to Airds pier, Appin. The
parish is of great extent, chiefly occupied
as grazing farms. About 5£ miles to the
north is Appin House, the seat of James
M'Alpine Downie esq. of Appin ; this
mansion is surrounded by some of the
finest timber on the coast. The ruins of
the old parish church, built in 1649, are
still standing on the Strath of Appin, a
little off the high road, a distance of
2 miles from Appin pier. The present
parish church was opened in July, 1890.
The Episcopal church, at Portnacroish,
stands a 6hort distance from Rose place,
and in its churchyard rest the remains of
the Stewarts of Fasnacloich. The United
Free church, built in 1846, stands on the
south side of the bay running in past
the Castle of Stalker up to Kenlochlaich,
the much admired strath. On a small
island near Portnacroich, full 2 mites
north, is the ancient and partly dilapi-
dated castle of Stalker, which is nearly
square, of considerable height, and has
evidently been a place of some strength ;
though its area is not extensive, it occu-
pies almost a moiety of the little islet on
which it stands; it was the seat of the
Stewarts of Appin. Shuna island also
contains the ruins of a castle. About half
a mile from the pier, situated in a park on
the road to Shian, is Airds House, the
residence of Col. William Macfie C.B.,
V.D. of Airds and Oban, which commands
a fine view of the head of Airds Bay.
Beyond this, at a distance of a quarter of
a mile, is Drimneil House; and near the
village are Barriemore House, the resi-
dence of John Maclntyre, of Invernahoile ;
Achnacone House, that of Alexander K.
Stewart esq. and Kenlochlaich House, of
D. H. Campbell -Munro esq. This parish
includes G-lencoe, for which see Balla-
chulish (South). Col. William Macfie C.B.,
V.D. of Airds; Alexander K. Stewart esq.
Achnacone House ; Tom Bullough esq.
Fasnacloich ; Duncan H. Campbell -Munro
esq. of Kenlochlaich; W. M' Alpine Leny
esq. of Duror; George W. Anderson esq.
Ardsheal; James M' Alpine Downie esq. of
Appin, and John Montague Spencer Stan-
hope esq. of Invercroran, are the principal
landowners. The area of the parishes of
Lismore and Appin is 92,656 acres;
rateable value, £18,040, and the population
in 1891, 3,242, and in 1901, 3,707, of which
940 are in Appin ecclesiastical parish.

at an expense of about £1,000; it contains

a quoad saora parish, erected out of the
original ecclesiastical parish of Ardchattan
and Muckairn. The church was built at
the expense of General D. Campbell, of
Lochnell, in 1827. A rude block of granite,
the first monument erected in Britain to

bridge crosses the river Awe, is the scene
of Sir Walter Scott's tale of the "High-

Pass of Cruachan or Brander, where King
Robert Bruce defeated Macdougal of Lome
in 1309.
ACH-NA-CLOICH, in this parish, about
9 miles from Oban, is a station on the
Callander and Oban branch of the Cale-
