POWFOOT, DALTON, MODSEWALD, RUTHWELL, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
CDMMERTREES is a parish and village— the latter, clean and
neat, is 84 miles s. of Edinburgh, the samo distance s.e. of
Glasgow, 22 n.w. of Carlisle, 13 s.e. of Dumfries, 10 s.e. of Lochma-
beu, the same distance s. from Lockerbie, C from Ecclefechan, and
4 from Auuan, situated on the Glasgow and South-Western Railway,
for wbich line there is a station at iho village. The parish, which
is about four miles in length by three in breadth, containing 9,466
acres, is bounded on the north-east by the river Annan, and on the
south by the Solway Firth. It is a flat, fertile, and well cultivated
district, and is now well enclosed. The name is derived from the
British words inn-ber-trec , signifying the hamlet at the short
valley, and is sufficiently descriptive of the local situation of the
village. About a mile Bouth-east of Oummertrees is Powfoot, a
fishing hamlet, situated on the shore of the Solway. Population of
the parish in 1881, 1,094.
Dalton is a parish and small village between three and four miles
from Cummertrees. The parish, which now comprehends the two
ancient ones of Meikle Dalton and Little Dalton. is four miles in
length by three in breadth, with about 6,8S6 acres. Its general
appearance is that of high cultivation, which has been extended
over once unprofitable moors and commons. In the churchyard are
several ancient tombstones to the memory of the Ross family,
descendants of the ennobled house of Ross of Halkhead, who were
long resident in this parish. Population of the parish in 1881,
579.
Mobsewald is a parish and village— the latter about six miles
from Dumfries, lying between that town and Annan: Tho kirk,
which is about a quarter of a mile from the village, on an elevated
site, contains a dilapidated effigy of Sir Simon Oarruthers, long
since laird of Mousewald. Acreage 6,889. Population in 1881, 558.
Ruthwbll is a parish and village— the latter about three milos
from Oummertrees ; this place is a barony, and is privileged to hold
markets and fairs, but it is long since the inhabitants availed
themselves of these rights. It was in early tlays celebrated for the
manufacture of salt; but this art has not been practised for some
time. Near the shore is the brow, well and hamlet, where Burns
spent several of the last weeks of his existence. The kirk and
manso of Ruthwell Btand about a quarter of a mile from that
village. The gardens of the manse, which are extensive and laid
out with great" taste, contain a very ancient Runic monument, iu a
good state of preservation. The parochial school is at Clahence-
field. About a mile from Ruthwell, in the parish of Mousewald,
is Mount Kedar, where stands a monument erected to the memory
of the Rev. Henry Duncan, d.d., lato minister of Ruthwell. Tho
memorial, which is of stone, consists of an arched base and
pyramid, forty feet in height ; on the base an inscription states that
be was the founder of tho sj stem of savings banks, and was born in
1774, and died in 1S46, after being minister of Ruthwell parish for
forty-four years, whon ho closed in communion with the Free
Church of Scotland. A Free church and school house are situated
here. The parish of Ruthwell has an area of 8,693 acres, aud con-
tained a population iu 1881, of 868.
