ARGYLLSHIRE
SLATER'S
SOUTHEND
IS n parish of 80,801 acres, situated at the southern extremity of the
peninsula of Kintyre, the village, which is sometimes called Newton
Argyll, being 10 miles south of Campbeltown. Agriculture and fishing
are the predominating occupations of the inhabitants, who, m the
summer, reap some advantage from the visits of many strangers to tins
romantic and interesting part of the country. About half a mile south
of the village stands the rock Dounavertie, a spot interesting to the
historian and the antiquarian, as having been the scene of many
sanguinary conflicts, with the details of which the intelligent villagers
are conversant — especially the ruthless massacre of three hundred of the
M'Donalds here by General Leslie after then' capitulation in 1649.
Few traces of the castle now remain, but a mile and a half west stand
the walls of a church, said to have been founded by St. Columba, who
landed in Scotland in 563. It was called Cill-Chohmi-Chille ,and the
burial ground was formerly divided by a small stream, on the north side
of which the Highbinders were interred, and on the south side the
Lowlanders ; but that distinction no longer exists. The Marquis of
Lome resides temporarily at Maeliarioch.
On the island of Sanda, about three miles distant, is a lighthouse,
said to be the best and mos* efficient one on the coast. A little to the
north of the village stands the palish church, and in the village, the
United Presbyterian church. The Board school here is a substantial
building, and a well conducted institution. Telegraphic communication
is complete between the Mull and the principal places in the county and
Glasgow. Population of the parish of Southend in 1881, 905.
