ABERNETHY AND ABERARGIE,
WITH THE PARISHES OF ARNGASK, DRON, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
XXBERNETHY is a parish lying partly in the county
of fife and partly in Perthshire — the village, said to
have been the capital of the Pictish kingdom, in Scot-
land, is scattered over a considerable space of ground,
8 miles s. e. from Perth, and 14 n. w. from Cupar, in
Fife; about halfa mile north of the river Earn, near to
its junction with the Tay. It is seated to the south of
a spacious and rich agricultural dale, hounded by lofty
hills which are chiefly planted with timber. Some of
the houses are tolerably wellbuilt, but the only struc-
ture deserving particular notice is a circular tower, the
only one of its kind (with the exception of that at
Biechin), in Scotland. It stands in an angle of the
burial ground of the Established Church, and is abuut
seventy-five feet high, and tweuty-four feet diameter
at its base. It is composed of sixty-four courses of
regularly hewn stone, and contains one bell and the
parish clock. The date of its erection is untmown,
but tradition ascribes its origin to the Picts, who are
said to have built it in one night, and that the stones of
which it is constructed were removed from the
distance of twelve miles, by a formed line — one man
passing them on to another, until t#e whole work was
completed. Abernethy is a, burgh of barony, and its
inhabitants are for the most part employed in weaving.
The parish of Abernethy is bounded by the river Earn
on the north, on the east by Newburgh and Abdie, and
on the south by Auchtermuchty and Strathmiglo; it
is between fiwand six miles both in breadth and length,
and besides the village of its name already described,
contains the small one of Aberargie, situated about
a mile to the west. A fair is held on the fourth Wed-
nesday in May.
