DUFFTOWN in MORTLACH.
ABERLOUR, CHARLESTOWN, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
'UFFTOWN is a village of modern date fhaving
been erected within the la&t five and forty years), in
the parish of Mortlach; 118 miles n. of Edinburgh,
49 n.w. of Aberdeen, 29 s.w. of Banff, 14 N. e. of Inve-
raven, and 4 s. of Aberlour; situated a short way to
the north of the old decayed hamlet of Moi tlach, near
the junction of the Duflan and the Fiddich waters.
The village is rapidly improving in appearance, extent,
and population, under the auspice; of its patrons and
owners, the Earl of Fife and theDuke of Richmond. This
parish is famous as the scene of the signal victory vic-
tory gained over the Danes by Malcolm II ; and the
district possesses the ruins of the castles of Auchen-
doun and Balnevy, of which Mr. Gordon, in his 'Sta-
tistical Account of Scotland,' says — ' When a stranger
is travelling through this part of Scotland for curiosity
or pleasure, they deserve his attention, and will
contribute to his amusement. Excellent accomo
ters Hotel, both of which are well conducted establish-
ments, the former is also a posting house. The parish
church is in the immediate vicinity of the village, which
also contains a free church and a neat Roman Catholic
chapel. Fairs are held on the first Tuesday in January,
the first Wednesday in April, the Monday before first
Tuesday in June (old style) ; the second Thursday in
July, the third Thursday in August, and third Thurs-
day in December (new style).
About four miles distant from Dufftown, in the
parish of ABERLOURis the pleasantand thriving village
of Charlestown. It contains a Church of the Estab-
lishment, and a Free Church. The Aberlour Hotel is
an excellent commercial, family andDosting establish-
ment. The fairs are held on the first Tuesday
in April, Thursday before the twenty sixth of May,
third Thursday of July, second Thursday of August,
and second Thursday of November.
