OCHILTREE
As a small but pleasant village, in the parisli of that name, district
of Kyle, 64 miles s.w. from Edinbm'gli, 49 n.w. from Dumfries, 37 s.
from Glasgow, 28 n. by e. from Gii'van, 22 n.w. from Sanquhar, 16 s.

Ayr, and 4 from Old Cumnock, situated on thosouth side of the
Lugar water, and on the high road from Ayr to Dumfries and Edin-
burgh. The country around is delightfully picturesque, and the
face of the parish, which is pretty level, with some agreeable uudu-
liltions, is well watered. The great Scottish reformer, John Knox,
married his second wife at this village ; she was the daughter of
Lord Ochiltree, who at that period resided at Ocliiltree House.
Ochiltree tormorly gave a baron's title to a branch of the family of
btewart. There is an Established church, a Free church and pub-
be school, also a subscription library well selected, and a reading
room. Fairs are held on the second Wednesday in Mav, and the
brst Tuesday m November, for cattle. The acreage of the parish is
about lb,423. Population of the village, in 1871, 699
