AHaYLESHIRE.
SLATER'S
APPIN AND BALLACHULISH SOUTH,
WITH CORPACH, ARDGOUR, KINGAIRLOCH, AND THE ISLAND3 OF LISMORE, SHUNA, AND THEIR VI0INITIS3.
XlPPIN, or !i3 it 13 nioro generally called Port Appim, is a smaU
village, in the united parish of Lismore and Appin, and comprised
in a district of the latter appellation; situated on 'the point of a
small promontory, on the eastern shore of Loch Linnho, 13 miles n.
of Oban, 15 k.w. of Bonaw, 35 n.w. of Inverary, 136 n.w. of Edin-
burgh, and 29 s.w. of Fort William. The parish is of great extent,
chiefly occupied as gra^'ing farms ; but the village contains very few
houses, and is a mile and a half off the main road. Three miles to
the north is Appin House, the seat of the late R. Downie, E^q. of
Appin; this mansion is surrounded by some of the finest timber on
the coast. Miss G. Downie is the present occupant. The church is
in the same direction, nearly two miles north of the village, and
there is a parliamentary church nine miles distant, on the way to
Ballachulish South. On a small island near Portnacroish, full two
miles north, is the ancient and partly delapidated castle of Stalker;
it is nearly si^uare, of considerable height, and has evidently been a
place of somo strength ; and though its area is not extensive, it
occupies almost a moiety of the little islet on which it stands. About
half a mile from Stalker Castlo, on the Island of Shuna, are still
the more ruin jus remains of another fortress of this description. A
fair, formerly held at Port Appin on the Friday before Martinmas,
now possesses but little attraction. There is a v>'ell-at tended fair,
however, for black cattle, held at Shian Feiiry, nearly three miles
to the south, on the Friday before the last Wednesday in May, and
the Friday before the last Wednesday in October; at Connell on
Saturday before the last Wednesday in May, and on Thursday before
the last Wednesday in October, and at Corran of Ardgovr on
third Friday in October. Population of the quoad aacra parish,
in 1371, 1,327.
Ballachulish South is a straggling but populous village, on the
south shore of Loch Leven, about three miles east of Ballachulish
Perry (in the same parish), and 15^i n. of Port Appin. On a small
island opposite the village of Ballachulish are the ruins of an old
chapel, supposed to have been erected by St. Mungo. The island is
now used as a burying ground. Near the village, at the foot of
Glencoe liills, are very extensive slate quarries, the property of
Lady Beresford and others, of Ballachulish, and wrought by Mr.
James Gardner, Glencoe, who exports annually about 30,000 tons of
this article to all parts of Scotland and the north of England ; thero

are about sis hundred men employed. A branch of the BanU of
Scotland is established in the village. Within a mile of the quarries
westward is an Episcopalian church, the largest in tho Highlanda,
and a small one for the Established Church of Scotland, also one for
Roman Catholics. The quoad sacra parish contained, in 1S71, a
population of &49 persons.
At Ballachulish South Ferry is a comfortablo hotel and
posting house, ft commodious and handsome building, pleasantly
situated. About three-quarters of a mile distant, a pier, with waiting
room, tic. has been erected ; here tho steamers call, and a convey-
ance from the hotel awaits their arrival. A sub-post office is also
here. In the immediate vicinity, at the entrance of a Boquesierod
valley, is Ballachulish House, tlie property of Lady Beresford; three
miles from which is Ardsheal, the seat of Alex. D. Anderson, Esq,
About a mile above the quarries, on the margin of Loch Leven,
near the opening of a glen exceedingly wild and romantic, and
almost embosomed by trees, is Invorcoe House, and opposite, on
the north shore of the Loch (which is here fully a mile broad), in
the county of Inverness, is Callart, the modern mansion of the late
Sir Duncan Cameron, Bart, of Fassifern and Callart, contributing
in an eminent degree to the beauty of the landscape.
At Corran Ferry, where Loch Linnhe narrows to a quarter of a.
mile in breadth, a lighthouse has been erected. Ben Nevis is dis-
tinctly seen from here, and to the right there is a magnificent view
of Glencoe.
LiSMORE is an island in Loch Linnhe, ten miles in length by about
two in breadth ; it lies between Appin and Morven, and belongs to
the same united parish with the former place. Groat quantities of
excellent lime, as well as oats and potatoeu, are exported from heuoe.
There is a small village on this isolated fertile spot called Port Ram-
sey; and at the southern point on a ridge of rocks prajecting some
distance into the channel stands a lighthouse, almost in a direct line
between Oban and the sound of Mull ; the hght, a catophric, is on a
high rounded pillar of stone masonry, and is an excellent and most
useful beacon. On this island are also a church, formerly a Cathe-
dral of tho diocese of Argyll, the remains of Doune or Auohindouno
Castle, at one time the residence of the bishops of Argyll, and the
ruius of a Danish fort. Population of the parish in 1371, 1,833.
