dictmes, founded iu 1232, by M'Coull, ance's'ter of the Lords of Lorne-
Here Bruce is thought to have held a Gaelic council after the battle
of Methvea. The venerablo mansion of Mrs. Jane E. Popham, of
Ardcbattau, is situated ijn a part of the^ite of the priory. A church
was erected at Ardclja^tan in 1836, at iTu expense to the heritors of
about .£1,0(JU; it coritaiu3 sittings for four hundred. The objects
that most forcibly 3t}itke the attention here are Loch Etive and Ben
Cruachan— the latter, with its broad shoulders, rearing its blunt-
pointed summit {J,670 feet above the salt water that laves his foot
Its circumference at the base is twenty miles. The journey is some
what fatiguing, but the view obtained from the summit w'ill ampi
reward the tourist for the trouble of ascending, as it ^extends ov r
the ^\ hole archipela.-^o of the western Isles from Islay to Skye ; pre-
vious to rain and other changes of weather sounds are said to issue
from Ben Cruachan. The popuUitiou of tlie auoad sacra pariah of
Ardchatfcau was in 1871, 1,173.
Two miles east of Taynuilt, wliere a stone bridge crosses tha
river Awe, is the scene of Sir Walter Scotfs tale of the " Highland
Widow," and two milesfurtheris the Pass of Cruachan or BRANDEie

)ONAW, orBuNAWE,is asmall scattered village on theriverAwe,
122 miles n.w. of Edinburgh, 80 n.w. of Glasgow, 12 e. ot Oban, and
20 N. of Inverary by Port Sonachan ferry — but round the head of
Ijoch Awe, by Dalmally, avoiding the ferry, it is 82 miles. The Lorn
Furuiice Company have an establishment here for making pig-iron.
The ore is of a peculiar kind, imported by the company from the
district uf Furness, in Laucasliire, and is smelted entirely with
charcoal made in the neighbourhood, froui the timber produced on
a large tract of country ; they are said to be the only furnaces in
Scotbind heated solely by charcoal, and the iron is considered
eijuai to any smelted in the kingdom. The trustees of the late Alex-
ander Kelly, Esq. employ about three huuLlred men in the manufac-
ture of the charcoal for these works. Bouaw is also much celebrated
for its salmon fishery, which affords employment to a considerable
number of persons intho fishing season. Large quantities of tish
are sent fresli in boxes to Glasgow and other parts of Scotland, as
well as pickled, sealed in jars, and kits or firkins for the Loudon
market. The church, which was erected in 1827-8, stands about a
mile above the iron furnace, near the road to Inverary, wliere also
is the parish school ; the funds for both tliese structiu'es were sup-
plied by the munificence of General D. Campbell, of Loehnell. A
rude block of granite, the first monument erected in Britain to the
memory of Lord Nelson, may be seen on an eminence near the
village.
At Ardchattan, about four miles north-west on the opposite side
of Loch Etive, stands the remains of an ancient priory of the Bene-
