lOSEHEARTY is a maritime village and burgh of barony, in
t,he parish of Pitsligo, 4Vj miles w. from Fraserburgh and 18 e. from
Banff. It has a good harbour capable of ailniitting vessels of from
eighty to one hundred tons, which, during the last few years, has
been considerably extended. The chief imx^orts are timber, coals
and salt, and it exports fish and grain; its commerce, however, is
not extensive.. Although inconsiderable in siae, it is a burgh of
barony, having been raised to that distinction by Charles II.
Within the parish arc two or three private schools, a parochial one,
and a public school.
The parish of Pitsligo Ues in the district of Buchan, on the sea
coast, betwixt Aberdour on the west and Fraserburgh on the cn?f,
and commencing about two mlies west of Kinnaird Head. The
land is generally fertile, and the face ot the country level. Pitsligo
Castle, formerly the seat of Lord Pitsligo (a title in the Forbes
family), is an ancient structure, surrounded with extensive gardens.
The labouring portion of the population in the parish arc priuci-
; pally employed in fishing, and others in agriculture. Pittullk
1 and"SAND5iAVEN are tv.o small viDages in this parish, both situated
i lictwecn Kinnaird Head and Roschearty Point, inhabited cbiefly by
t fishermen. The population of Rosehearty in 1S71 was 1,206, and of
' the entire parish of PitsUgo, 2,218.
