held every Monday evening in the Temperance Institute, and an
evangelistic meeting on Sabbath evenings in Town Hall or elsewhere,
besides special meetings as opportunity offers.
Greenock Sabbath School Union— Instituted 1870. — J. I).
Scott, hon. president ; William Auld, president ; R. Dovvnie, vice-
president ; Jas. Voung, 32 Forsyth Street, treasurer ; H. B. Kerr and
Duncan Orr, joint-secretaries ; with a committee of ten, and a general
connnittee consisting of one representative from each associated school.
The objects of the Union are — 1st, to encourage unity, and increase
Sabliath Schools throughout the town ; 2nd, to improve the method of
conducting schools ; and 3rd, to promote the personal piety of the
teachers, and to unite in prayer for a blessing on their work. (leneral
meetings of the Union are held three times a year.
Greenock Working Boys' and Girls' Religious Society — James
Morton, 30 Forsyth Street, hon. president ; John Wilson, president ;
W. D. Low, vice-president ; Robert Macpherson, 33 Cathcart
Street, treasurer ; J. B. Patrick, secretary, West Blackball Street.
Jonathan Burns, keeper of the Society's rooms. Its chief aim is to
impart religious instruction, and form a connecting link between the
Sabbath School and the Church. It provides classes for mutual
improvement and meets for social entertainment, and by means of
Savings Banks it seeks to foster provident habits. Meetings are held
every Sabbath forenoon, at eleven o'clock, in Town Hall, John Street
Hall, Temperance Institute, Crawfurdsburn Free Church vSchool, Star
Hall, West Burn Square, High Vennel Mission Hall, Shaw .Street
Public School, Hall of Mechanics' Institute. St. Andrew Square Public
School, Mearns Street Public School, and Prospecthill Street Hall.
Greenock Female Benevolent Society — Instituted 181 1 — for the
benefit of aged females of good moral character, supported by voluntary
subscription. The Lady Octavia Shaw Stewart, patroness ; Mrs
M'Clure, 66 Union Street, president ; Mrs A. J. Black, 16 Ardgowan
Square, treasurer ; Miss Pennell, 23 Patrick Street, secretary ; Rev.
John Milne Jarvie, chaplain ; 40 superintendents, 40 visitors, and
19 collectors. The committee meet on the second Monday of every
month, in the Sessional Hall of the West Parish, and a general meeting
is held once a year in January, for the election of a Committee of
Management for the coming year, as also for the purpose of being
informed of the past year's transactions.
Old and St. Thomas' Work Society — Conducted by ladies of the
AVest Parish, Free West, and St. Thomas' Church. Clothing sold at
20 Charles Street (Mrs Campbell). Miss M. Hunter, F'orsyth Street,
treasurer ; Mrs Robertson, Margaret Street, secretary.
Greenock Charitable Society for the Relief of the Casual Poor —
Instituted 186 1. — Sir Michael R. Shaw vStewart and James Stewart,
patrons ; Provost Shankland, president ; Abram Lyle, and Joseph D.
Scott, vice-presidents ; J. C. Hart, National Bank, treasurer ; James
Nicoll, 33 Cathcart Street, secretary ; and an acting committee of 28
members, with power to add to their number. The object of the society
is to procure funds for urgent cases of casual destitution, without
