Greenock Natural History Society — F"oanded in 1878. — W. J.
Marshall, M.D., president; George H. Black, treasurer; Marcus Calder,
M.D., secretary. The objects of this Society are to promote the study of
Natural History by meetings for the reading of papers and the exhil)i-
tion of specimens, and by excursions for practical study. The Society
meets in the Lecture Hall, Watt Institution, Kelly Street.
Greenock Protestant Association — Instituted 1862. Object — The
Study of the Bible and Romish Works; the enlightenment of Protestants
as to the real character of Popery, in its religious, social, and political
aspects, and the conversion of Romanists. Provost Shankland and A.
»Swan, presidents ; Councillor Mitchell, hon. president ; Rev. W.
Wilson, chairman ; J. R. Cuthl)ertson, treasurer ; A. Gordon,
secretary ; W. MTlwee, librarian (library kept at 2 Grey Place) ; W.
Sinclair, conductor of psalmody ; with a committee of members.
The members meet for mutual improvement during winter months,
on Friday evenings, and young men are cordially invited. Essays
are read and conversations and readings engaged in. The library
contains several hundred volumes. Lectures by local and other
ministers and laymen are delivered from time to time. Young
men of good character, who admit the Bible to be the Word of God and
their guide, are admitted as members. Annual subscription, is.
The British and Foreign Correspondence Association — Instituted ist
June, 1882. — Offices, Fleet Street, London, and 12 Kilblain Street,
Greenock. This Association has for its objects the providing its
members with correspondents in aBy part of the world, with whom
they may exchange ideas on any subject, either scientific, commercial
or general, for mutual information and improvement, and the
â– encouragement of literary talent amongst the members by means of
a monthly magazine ( The Associate)^ open to original contributions
and criticisms thereof. The Associate Club at Anderlon's Hotel, Fleet
Street, London. E.C., is open to all country members of the Association
who may be temporarily resident in the metropolis. Suljscription —
One shilling entrance fee, and three shillings per annum. Secretary
and treasurer, Angus Maclean ; membership, over 2000.
Greenock Total Abstinence Society— Instituted 1836.— Offices and
Halls, Temperance Institute, West Stewart Street. Ex-Provost Camp-
bell, ex-Provost Morton, ex-Provost Lyle, and Robert Little, Esq., hon.
presidents ; Bailie Lang, president ; B. C. Ross, Neil Buie, Donald
Brotchie, and R. P. Templeton, vice-presidents ; Robert Dixon,
treasurer ; William Smith, secretary ; Adam Anderson, registrar of
society and curator of institute.
Greenock Bible Society — Instituted 1807. —James Morton, presi-
