The object of the institution is to place within the
reach of the public the fullest and most recent infor-
mation on all subjects of general interest, whether
commercial, literary, or scientific ; to provide an
agreeable place of resort in the intervals of business ;
to excite, especially among young men, a taste for
intellectual and elevating pursuits ; and to secure
the means of its gratification by affording the utmost
facilities for systematic study, in various branches of
useful knowledge. The newsroom is abundantly
supplied with the earliest telegraphic intelligence,
newspapers, and periodicals ; and the library contains
upwards of 20,000 volumes. Restaurant, recreation
rooms, gymnasium, magazine and writing rooms for
the use of ladies and gentlemen. Private letter
boxes, and many other conveniences are provided
for the members. Terms of subscription : —
Life subscriber's ticket, gentlemen, transferable,
£21, not transferable, £15 15?.; ladies, not trans-
ferable, £7 7s.; for gentlemen above 21 years of
age, 25s. annually, 7s. 6d. quarterly ; for gentlemen
under 21 years of age, 15s. annually, 5s. quarterly ;
ladies, 15s. annually; country subscribers, 15s.
annually. Entrance fees. — All new subscribers re-
quire to pay the following entrance fees in addition
to the first subscription : — Gentlemen, 5s. ; ladies,
country subscribers, young men under 21 years of
age, and quarterly subscribers, 2s. 6d. each.
COMMERCIAL, COLLEGE.
Morning and Evening Classes (open to both sexes)
are conducted by experienced Masters, the following
subjects being included in the Curriculum: — Arith-
metic, Mathematics, Elocution, English, French,
German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, Greek,
Shorthand, Type-writing, Writing, Book-keeping,
Commercial Geography and History, Mercantile Law,
Political Economy, and Ambulance or First Aid to
the injured. The Winter Term extends from September
till February, and the Spring Term from March till
May.
Special Afternoon Classes for Ladies.
SCHOOL OF MUSIC.

The Athenseum School of Music has been established
for the purpose of providing a thorough high-class
musical education on moderate terms, combined with
all the advantages which have proved so successful
and so beneficial in the promotion of musical culture
in the Continental Conservatoires and the Music
Schools in London aud elsewhere.
SCHOOL OF ART.
Principal, Mr. Charles G. Kennaway (formerly
of the Royal College of Art, South Kensington, and
L'Academie Julian, Paris).
The course of instruction is intended to admit of
the student obtaining a thorough knowledge of Draw-
ing and Painting, leading up through the Preliminary
Class to the Antique and Life Classes. Instruction
is also given in Modelling, Wood Carving, Stone
Carving, &c. Evening classes are formed for Free-
hand, Model Drawing, Perspective, Architectural
Drawing, Building Construction, Machine Drawing,
and Solid Geometry.

THE MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY OF
GLASGOW.

For the purpose of popularising the use of the
microscope as a recreation, of affording incentives
to students of nature to engage in original research,
and to give opportunities for mutual aid by means
of meetings at which papers are read, demonstrations
given, and objects of interest exhibited. Annual sub-
scription, 5*.
The Society meets in the rooms of the Philosophical
Society, 207 Bath street. Further particulars as to
meetings, rules, &c. from hon. secretary, Arthur

ANDERSONIAN NATURALISTS' SOCIETY.
Instituted 1885.
For the encouragement of the study of natural
history in all its branches, by meetings for reading
and discussing papers and exhibiting specimens, and
by excursions for field work. The Society meets on
the first Friday of each month, in the Ander-
sonian Buildings, 204 George Street, Glasgow, and
excursions take place on various dates during the
season. Further information may be had on appli-
cation to the secretaries.

Founded in 1878, holding an annual exhibition
of the works of its members. The president is Sir
Francis Powell, R.W.S.,and the vice-president, Wm.
M'Taggart, R. S. A. ; elections take place about Febru-
ary. The council require candidates to submit two
water colours for inspection of members. Entrance
fee, £10, 10s. Annual subscription, £1, Is.
