BILLETING OF SOLDIERS.
Occupants of Horses, Shops, Offices of every description, Manufacturing
premises, Stores, &c, are liable to have Millitary quartered on them, in
respect of their rent— £5 to £10, One Man ; £10 and upwards, Two Men,
The quartering is for Seven days, but more men may be quartered when
the period is only for One, Two, or Three days.
Companies are billeted on, and the individual members of each company.
All Teachers are exempted, Clerical, College and School, if they exercise
no other vocation. Widows also, and unmarried Ladies not in business on
their own account. As the citizens are not in the habit of lodging soldiers,
the usual payment to men, under a Billet, has been, for Two men for Seven
days, if privates, 2s. 6d., and billet returned to the men — if one of these is
a serjeant or corporal, 61. additional — for one man, if a private, Is. 6d., if
a ser'jeant or corporal, 6d additional, and billet returned to the man. The
lowest rent on which billets are issued shows that the actual poor are
thereby exempted.
