OflSce — an accurate statement of the contents and value, the date of posting,
and other particulars. Arrangements have been made with many Foreigrt
Countries whereby senders may take upon themselves the payment of the
Customs charges if they so desire.
Parcels for Her Majesty's ships cannot, as a rule, be accepted for trans-
mission unless the name of the particular place, to which in each case the^
parcel is to be forwarded, forms part of the address.
No letter whatever may be sent in a parcel addressed to any Foreign
Country, or to Australia, British Central Africa, Cape Colony, Natal, South,
Africa, Fiji, Jamaica, Mauritius, New Zealand, Seychelles, Straits Settlements,
and Trinidad. Invoices in open envelopes, giving particulars of the goods,
contained in the parcel may, however, be enclosed.
Parcels for Ascension, St Helena, South and Central Africa, and uninsured
parcels for Egypt and Zanzibar, must not exceed £50 in value.
Parcels containing coin, watches, jewelry, or any article of gold or silver,,
cannot be sent by Parcel Post to any Foreign Country or British Possession in-
cluded in the insurance system, unless they are insured for at least part of
their value, and packed according to special regulations.
Parcels should be securely packed, and must, if for Foreign Countries, be so
sealed that they cannot be opened without the seals being broken.
Compensation for Loss or Damage.
The Postmaster-General will, subject to certain rules, give compensation for
the loss or damage of uninsured parcels sent by Parcel Post to various foreign
countries (to amounts not exceeding 12s and 20s) when such loss or damage
takes place while the parcels are under his custody ; and in the case of parcels
lost or damaged while under the control of the Post Offices of these countries,
the Postmaster- General will endeavour to obtain compensation for the senders.
Insurance of Foreign and Colonial Parcels.
Parcels for the following countries are accepted for Insurance (to amounts
varying from £20 to £120) at the following rates: — To secure compensation up
to £12, a fee of 5d ; £24— 7id; £36— lOd; £48— Is OM; £60— Is 3d
£120— 2s 3jd.
Foreign Countries. — Algeria, Austria- Hungary, Azores, Belgium, Bey rout, Cameroons
Chile, China, Constantinople, Danish West Indies, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France
Germany, Holland, Italy, Luxemburg, Madeira, Montenegro, Norway, Portugal
Koumania, Russia, Servia, Smyrna, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunis, Turkey (Austrian).
British Possessions.— Aden, Antigua, Ascension, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda,
Brit. E. Africa, Brit. Guiana, Brit. N. Borneo, Ceylon, Cyprus, Dominica, Falkland Is.,
Gambia, Gibraltar, Grenada, Hong-Kong, India, Labuan, Lagos, Mauritius (ma Colombo),
Montserrat, Nevis, Newfoundland, New South Wales, New Zealand, St Helena, St Kitts,
St Lucia, St Vincent (West Indies), Sarawak, Sierra Leone, South Australia, South
Nigeria, Straits Settlements, Tasmania, Tobago, Tortola, Trinidad, Victoria, Zanzibar.
Insured parcels must be substantially packed, and sealed with wax or lead.
Seals must be placed over each join or loose flap of the covering, and at the ends of
the string. The seals must all have distinct imj)ressions of the same device, such
device not consisting merely of straight or curved lines. Parcels containing coin,
watches, or jewelry must be enclosed in strong boxes substantially fastened.
Government Insurances and Annuities.
Insurances may be effected for amounts not less than £5 and not more than
£100 to persons between 14 and 65 years of age ; and Annuities may be
purchased for amounts not less than £1 and not more than £100 on one life.
Children between 8 and 14 years of age can be insured for £5. Forms of
proposals may be obtained at the Post Office,
