LARGO.
HIS parish is about six miles in length and of
unequal breadth, containing 5469 acres. It is
bounded on the south by the German ocean, which
here forms a fine bay, and the whole parish is in-
closed and well cultivated. — The town of Largo,
whicli is 3 miles from Leven, and 3 from Colins-
burgh, is .situated at the influx of the small rivulet
of Keil, whose estuary forms the harbour. Besides
the town of Largo, there is a small village on the
coast, called Drumochy, chiefly inhabited by fish-
ermen. On the west bank of the Keil are the ruinsf
of the ancient castle of Balcurvie. This parish
gave birth to Alexander Selkirk, rendered famous
by the pen of De Foe, as Robinson Crusoe.* In the
town of Largo there is a flax spinning mill which
employs a number of hands.

_ S a burgh of barony ; it is seated on the ridge of
a hill, on the south side of the Leven, and on the
north side of the Cambay, and is distant from
Kinross 12 miles, Cupar-Fife 12, Kirkaldy 9. It
consists principally of one street, running from east
to west, but is badly paved and lighted ; the steps to
the upper flats are on the out side of the houses,
which is a gieat inconvenience to foot passengers. It
is a very ancient town, of this the irregularity of the
street, & the architecture of the houses, being built
with the cable ends to the street, are sufficient
proofs. The inhabitants boast of their upiight
dealing, as a proof ot which they adduce, that they
have not a writer in the town. Many improvements
have been made of late years ; at the east end of the
town is Leslie house, the seat of the right hon.
Earl Rothes. The proverbial plainness of the Scottish
churches is here exemplified in its greatest perfec-
tion ; it is a handsome plain building without
any decoration. On the Leven are many mills for
spinning flax, grinding corn, &c.; several bleach
grounds are also on its banks. Leslie in governed
by two bailies, and a town clerk. Fairs are held
on the second Tuesday in April, and the first Wed-
nesday in October.
