LEVEN
S a considerable village in the parish of Scoonie,
and situated at the mouth of the river Leven : it is
a place of some importance from its contiguity to
the Kirkland works, which are probably the most
considerable in Fifeshire, employing from four to
five thousand people ; the flax spinning mills alone
employ from three to four thousand exclusive of
the linen and sail cloth manufactory and bleach-
field. Leven has greatly improved of late years,
and may with justice be considered the most thriv-
ing village in the County. The harbour is good, and
an elegant chain bridge has been thrown across the
Leven ; this bridge is much admired, and reflects
great credit on the architect. The town also con-
tains an excellent inn, remarkable for its accommo-
dations, and the kind attention of.the host. Th? Du-
rie foundry, belonging to Messrs. Balfour and Co. is
very extensive, and produces specimens of work,
that may stand in competition with any of a similar
kind in Scotland.
POST OFFICE — Post Mistress, Miss Margaret Howden. The mail arrives at five in tlie morn-
ing, and is despatched at two in the afternoon.
