PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY OF GLASGOW.
Instituted 9th November, 1802.
For tlie advancement of the mathematical, physical,
and natural sciences, with their applications ; and to
promote the ditFusion of scientific knowledge. Meets
fortnightly, from November to April inclusive, in the
Society's Buildings, Adelaide Place, 207 Bath street.
Possesses an extensive scientific library. Consists of
about 900 members and associates — honorary, corre-
sponding, and ordinai-y. Connected with the society
are physical, sanitary and social economy, architec-
tural, geographical and ethnological, economic science,

Instituted 1851.
For the encouragement of the pursuit of natural
history in all its branches, by meetings for reading
of papers and exhibition of specimens, and by excur-
sions for field work. Candidates for membership are
recommended by two members of the society. The
society meets on the last Tuesday of the months
September to April, and monthly during summer,
in the society's rooms, 207 Bath Street.

The object of this Society is to endeavour to im-
prove the condition of the poor by bringing to bear
within their homes and places of meeting the elevat-
ing influences of natural and artistic beauty, and by
such means inspiring them with a taste for self-culture.
The Society is divided into the following sections —
(1) Music — Concerts are given in poor localities
by the choir ; secretary, Mr. Peterson, 173 St.
Vincent St. (2) Decorations — The walls of infirmary
wards, mission halls, &c., are decorated by mural
paintings, gifts of pictures, &c.; secretary. Miss C.
Henderson, 17 Belhaven Ter. (3) Window Garden-
ing — The taste for flower growing is fostered among
poor children by the distribution of plants and seeds ;
secretary, Mrs. Bradock, 5 Thornville Terrace, Hill-
head. (4) Sanitary Aid — Information on health and
sanitary subjects is given at mothers' meetings, girls'
classes, &c.; secretary, Mrs. W. j\Iirrlee3,42 Aytoun Rd.
Pollokshields. (5) Housing of the Poor — To im-
prove the condition of the dwellings of the working
classes in the city. Secretary, Miss M. Blackie, 1
Belhaven Ter. (6) Wood Carving; secretary, Mrs.
Hector, 16 Lansdowne Crescent.
Information as to membership, &c.,may be obtained
from the hon. secretary, or treasurer ; also from Mr.
John Honeyman, 140 Bath Street, and other
members of the committee, any of whom will be glad
to receive donations of money or works of art for the
Society.

The object of the Society is the advancement of the
science of geology by means of periodical Meetings for
its study, the reading and discussion of original Papers
on subjects illustrative of geology or its allied Sciences,
the exhibition and description of Specimens, the de-
livery of lectures during winter, and by excursions in
summer.
Life membership, £5 5s. ; ordinary, 10s. per annum
(entitling member to a copy of Transactions as pub-
lished) ; associate (who must be a student attending
a geological class), 2s. 6d. per annum.
The Society meets in the Philosophical Society
Rooms, 207 Bath Street, on the second Thursday of
each month from October to May ; and excursions are
made to suitable geological localities during the spring
and summer months.
