CHARITABLE AND FRIENDLY INSTITUTIONS.
SCOTTISH PERMISSIVE BILL AND TEM-
PERANCE ASSOCIATION.
Instituted Oct., 1858.

Object. — The object of the association shall be the
promotion of total abstinence from all intoxicating
drinks — not as a matter of mere expediency, but as
a duty, based upon Christian morals and sound
philosophy — and to seek, through the united efforts
of moral and social reformers, the total suppression of
the liquor traffic by legislative enactment. During
the year 160 towns were visited, 500 lectures de-
livered, 63 societies and 2900 members enrolled.
The income of the association amounted to JE813.

The objects of the society are (1) for relieving
destitute Caithness men in Glasgow; and (2) for
cultivating a friendly intercourse among Caithness
men residing in Glasgow. Meets quarterly. Funds-
raised by subscription from members and donations.
WIDOWS' FRIEND SOCIETY.
Instituted 1856, for the special benefit of destitute
Christian widows in Glasgow. The object of the
society is the relief of destitute Christian widows, in
such a way as may most conduce to their temporal
benefit. For the carrying out of this object the
society shall have principally in view the advance of
such sums, in the shape of loaD, as may be found
necessary to assist in providing a permanent means
of support ; although, in very necessitous circum-
stances, an immediate sum may be paid over in the
way of a donation.

will have the best attention of the committee at the
first meeting following.
