70 LOCAL INSTITUTIONS— EDUCATIONAL.
WESTERN TRAINING ACADEMY,
THISTLE STREET, SAUCHIEHALL ROAD.
THIS Institution was established in 1848 for the purpose of Educating the
Children of the Wealthy Class on that system of Bible, Moral, and Intel-
lectual Training, which has been so successfully carried out in the Normal Semi-
nary, and so extensively adopted throughout England and the Colonies.
Rector JAMES LONG, M.A.
Lady Superintendent Mrs. RUTHERFORD.
PUBLIC CLASSES.
These consist of the following departments : —
INITIATORY.
For Pupils (Boys and Girls) from Three to about Seven Years of Age.
JAMES BAILEY, Master, (from the Normal Seminary.)
JUVENILE.
Junior Division for Pupils (Boys and Girls) from Seven to about Ten Years of Age.
Senior Division for Pupils (Boys and Girls) from Ten to about Fourteen Years of Age.
JAMES LONG, M.A., Master, (from the Normal Seminary.)
WRITING AND ARITHMETIC.
Divisions as in the Juvenile Department.
JOHN LAIDLAW, Master, (from the Normal Seminary.)
CHARLES FRAZER, Assistant.
Miss ANDERSON, Attendant on the Young Ladies.
By these arrangements, it will be observed, there is a uniformity of system secured
which must greatly facilitate the progress of the Pupils. The Lessons are also in
every case carefully adapted to their capacity. The Children in the Initiatory are
never confined to their Classes for more than an hour at a time ; and Oral Gallery
Training Lessons are in part substituted for those from books at each stage of the
course. The Pupils are thus relieved to a great extent from burthensome lessons at
home, and are left more at liberty to enjoy the society of their Parents and of the
Family ; aud the Trainers are enabled at the same time to impart a greater amount
of general knowledge, and to communicate it in a more interesting and instructive
manner. The great object of the system is not only to develop and strengthen the
Physical, Intellectual, and Moral Powers of the Young, but to carry out Family and
Social Training, by making School, as far as possible, part of the Home of the
Children.
Mid-day play-hour from Twelve till One o'clock, during which time the Pupils
take Luncheon together ; and play under the superintendence of the Teachers, with
a view to the more efficient carrying out of their Physical and Moral Training.
