BY JOHN MCDONALD, Teacher of English, Geography, and Elocution, Edinburgh.
" Mr M'Donald has produced not only a capital text-book for the scholar, but a volume
that will be of great service in private families, for improvement in that knowledge which is
of the last importance both here and hereafter." — Caledonian Mercury.
" A most judicious and interesting work." — Edinburgh Chronicle.
" The work is calculated to be of much service to the young 5 and we sincerely recommend
it." — Edinburgh Observer
" The author of this excellent volume is well known as a highly successful teacher of the art
of speaking, as well as of other essential branches of practical education. This work is intended
not only to convey a clear and comprehensive view of Christian Doctrine and Duty, derived
directly from the Holy Scriptures, but to impress upon the youthful student the rules of elo-
cution, and their practical application generally. The manner in which Mr M'Donald has
effected these objects is at once simple, ingenious, and impressive. His method of notation is
particularly calculated to arrest the notice, and to direct the judgment of the reader. We
recommend the work to general use." — Edinburgh Evening Post.
" This work is principally intended for the rising generation, but in it will be found much
to instruct those of mature years. It requires only to be known to secure for itself a very
favourable reception from the public. It ought to be in the possession of every teacher of
youth in Scotland." — Constitidional.
" The design, execution, and tendency of this little volume are excellent. In many re-
spects the plan is wholly original, and the author has been equally successful in presenting
the student of Scripture with a help to the formation of accurate views, sound principles, and
good taste. The passages are grouped with remarkable precision and judgment, and the
author exhibits throughout a thorough acquaintance with the Sacred Volume. The first
part of the work is devoted to a summary of the rules of elocution, and of all the rhetorical
treatises that have come in our way, we unhesitatingly give the palm to this. We really
think Mr M'Doneld's a valuable book, and one which it is our duty to recommend to teachers
of week-day and Sabbath schools, as well as to families and private individuals. It is equally
fitted to be useful to young and old, learned and illiterate, and we are not at all surprised
to find that it has called forth the unqualified praises of distinguished clergymen." — Scottish
Guardian.
