2349 ENTBY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICEES.
Postgraduate Instruction and Examination for the
Rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander.
17. The PostGraduate Instruction o£ Naval Medi-
cal Officers will consist of two distinct courses:—
(1) A five months' course prior to advancement to
Surgeon-Commander ;
(U) A second course of three months' duration lor
officers of not less than 14 years' seniority.
Course (i), which is compulsory for all Surgeon
Lieutenant-CommanderB will be followed by an
examination before tlie Medical Examining Board In
London, the successful passing of which will be a
qualification for promotion to the rank of Surgeon-
Commander. The course is to be taken as the
exigencies of the Service permit, but not before an
Officer has the seniority ol two years as a Surgeon
Lieutenant-Commander. The courses will take
place twice a year.
The subjects of study and examination will be—
Compulsory:—
(a) Clinical Medicine and clinical Surgery.
(6) Operative Surgery.
(c) Anaesthetics (practical).
(d) Ophthalmology.
(el Clinical pathology.
(.f) Hygiene.
Optional;—
(a) Throat, Nose, and Ear Diseases.
(h) Skiagraphy,
(t) Bacteriology.
A Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander who falls to
oblaiu a pass will be allowed a second trial, hut will
uot have a second course of instruction. Should
he again be unsu'C^ssfnl. ho .. ill he compulsorily
retired on attaining eight years' seniority, with
such gratuity as the Admiralty may see lit to
Kraot up to a maximum ol £1,000, Imt not exceeding
£100 for each ye'^r's service.
Instruction in clinical pathology and hygiene will
be given at the Naval Medical School ; the remain-
ing subjects will be studied at the "Dreadnought"
Hospital and other civil hospitals in London, as may
be arranged from time to time by the Medical
Director-General of the Navy.
The Surgeon Lieutenant - Commanders going
through the course will be accommodated at the
Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and will be under
the general control of the President. Their instruc-
tion throughout will be under the immediate super-
vision ol the Professor of Hygiene, appointed in
charge of studies.
Course (ID Is not compulsory, but is designed to
aflord senior officers the opportunity ol relreshing
their general knowledge ol ajrgery and medicine,
and of making themselves lamiliar with modern
advances. There will not be any fixed syllabus of
instruction or examination, but arrangements will
be made in each case by the medical officer In charge
of studies at Greenwich to meet individual require-
ments, and a report will be made by this officer to
the Medical Director-General at the close of the
course. The officers attending this second course
will also be accommodated at Greenwich.

The special attention ol Candidates la directed to
the following rnleB under which Officers are allowed
to withdraw from the Service after 4 year's full pay
service In the Eoyal Navy, with the advantage of
joining the Reserve ol Naval Medical Officers — (see
below).
After 4 years' service In the Royal Navy, an officer, 11
he wishes, may pass Irom Active Service to the
Reserve ol Naval Medical Officers, when he will reap

(I) He win be granted a gratuity of £600 on
passing Into the Reserve.
(II) His name will be retained In the Navy List ;
he will retain his Naval rank and be entitled
to wear his Naval uniform under the Regu-
lations applying to officers on the Retired
and Reserved Lists ol His Majesty's Navy.
(ill) If he agree to remain In the Reserve lor 4
years, he will receive a retaining lee ol £25
per annum. If, at the expiration of this
period, he agree to remain In the Reserve
for a further period ol 4 years, he will
continue to receive the same retaining lee.
Any Officer who Irom residence abroad, physical
disability, or for other reason, may be considered by
the Admiralty to be not immediately available for
Service if required, will be liable to removal from
the Reserve and forfeiture of retainer.
Should an officer prefer it, however, he may simply
ente" the Reserve for a period not exceeding 8 years,
with . jwer to give six months' notice of his intention
to resign his position at any time (In which case he
will receive no retaining fee). He may also adopt
this method of Reserve Service after the expiration
of 4 years served under the conditions referred to In
(iii), by renouncing his retaining lee lor his last 4
years' service in he Reserve,
No officer will be allowed to remain In the Reserve
for a longer period than 8 years.
V/hile belonging to the Reserve, Officers must
report any change ol address to the Secretary ol the
Admiralty.
Officers ol the Reserve will be liable to serve In tho
Royal Navy in times of war or emergency. When
called up lor such service they will receive the rate
of pay, viz., 17s. a day and allowances, to which they
would have been entitled after 4 years' service on
the Active List, and an outfit allowance of £20.
Complete copies of the Regulations for the entry
of Medical Officers will be forwarded on application.
REGULATIONS FOR THE ENTRY OF SUR-
GEON LIEnTENANTS FOR TEMPORARY
SERVICE IN THE MEDICAL DEPART-
MENT OP THE ROYAL NAVY.
Surgeons who may be temporarily employed in the
Royal Navy to meet the requirements ol the Service
will be appointed under the loUowing regulations:—
QUALUFICATIONS.
To be registered under the Medical Act as qualified
to practise Medicine and Surgery in Great Britain
and Ireland.
To produce eertiflcatos ol good character.
To be reported physically fit after medical exam-
ination.
Age not to exceed 40 years.

To bo granted 30 days' advance ol pay on joining a
ship after appointment.
To receive the same allowances as are payable to
permanent Officers of their rank.
Lodging money at the rate of £50 a year Is naually
allowed when employed on shore without Quarters
In the United Kingdom, and £24 a year In lieu of
rations. In cases, however, of temporary employ-
ment on shorn, the lodging andpTovlsIon allowances
