ENTEY AND EXAMINATION OP OFFICERS. 2350
It Quarters are provided In a Medical Establish-
ment, an allowance is granted in lieu o( provisions,
(or self and servant, and for fuel and lights at the
rate of £39 a year in the United Kingdom, and £108
a year abroad.
Unifoem.
Each Surgeon to provide himself a^ follows :—
(1) Frock coat, waistcoat, and trousers.
(2) Undress coat.
(3) Uniform cap.
(i) MesB Jacket and waistcoat.
(5) Sword and undress bolt.
All as specified in the Uniform Regulations.
To cover the above each officer accepted for service
win receive an Equipment allowance of £20 (payable
on the Officers being called up for active service).
The following iustruments must be provided by
the Surgeon Lieutenants : —
A Pocket case of Instruments.
A Stethoscope.
Three Clinical Thermometers.
MESSING.
Surgeon Tjloutonants will he allowed, when
attached to ships in commission, the onlinary ship's
rations ; but will have to pay about 2.s. a day towards
the maintenance of their mess as Ward-room
Officers.
Pensions fob Wounds and to Widows, &c.*
In the event of Surgeon Lieutenants engaged for
temporary service being wounded in His Majesty's
Service, Gratuities or Pensions, varying in amount
according to the injuries sustained, will be granted,
on the basis of the awards In similar cases of Naval
Officers.
Should Temporary Service Surgeon Lieutenants
be killed in action, or die within two years of
wounds received in action, or meet their death by
acts of the enemy, Pensions and Allowances will be
granted to their widows, children, &c., according to
the scale laid down for Naval Officers Csee p. 2358).
In addition to the foregoing Pensions, the widows
and children of officers killed in action will be
granted the following Gratuities: —
Widows — One year's pay of their husband's corres-
ponding rank in the Royal Navy.
Each unmari'ied child, under the age of 21, one-
third of the Gratuity paid to the widow.
These Pensions and Gratuities can be given only
in cases of Injury or death caused by acts of the
enemy, and not on account of injury, disability or
death, which may result from carrying on the
ordinary duties of the Service.
Conditions of Sekvick.
To engage for six months' certain, but the liability
to serve will be limited to (Ive years.
To serve when and where required from the date
of signing the Declaration, t
To be liable to immediate discharge for misconduct
or incompetency.
To rank with, but after. Surgeon Lieutenants in
the permanent service.
To be under the general rules of the Service as
regards discipline, &c.
To receive two calendar months' notice of soi-vlcos
being no longer required except in the case of an
officer invalided.
To be granted a gratuity of two calendar months'
pay on discharge if not discharged for misconduct or
incompetency.
Voluntary resignation of appointment will be
allowed subject to the convenience of the Service,
but the gratuity of two calendar month's pay on
discharge will be thereby forfeited.

REGULATIONS RESPECTING THE ENTRY
OF PAYMASTER CADETS.
1. Appointments to Paymaster Cadetships will be
made by limited competition, with the following
exception, viz.:—
One candidate will be nominated annually, who
will be required to obtain such an aggregate of
marks in Class I. as may satisfy the Civil Service
Commissioners.
2. This candidate will he selected by the Board of
Admiralty from sons of oliioers of the Navy or Royal
Marines who have been killed in action or who havo
been lost at sea on active service, or killed on duty
or who have died of wounds received in action or
injuries received on duty within six months from the
date of such action or injury, or who have performed
long and meritorious service.
Except as regards exemption from the competitive
examination, the candidate will be subject in all
respects to these regulations.
3. All candidates, including the candidates for the
service nomination referred to In iiara. 2. will be re-
quired to present themselves before a Committee,
which will interview each candidatosop.aratoly. The
First Iiord of the Admiralty will bo guided by the
recommendation of the Comnnitteo In his selection
of candidates to v/liom nomination will be granted to
compete at the oxamiualion for Paynuistcr Cadet-
ships.
Candidates will be required to bring with them to
the Interview certificates of good conduct from the
masters of any schools at which they may have been
educated during the two previous years, or, if
educated at homo, from their tutor or the clergyman
of the parish in which they reside.
Applications to have the names of candidates
placed on the list should be addressed to the Assis-
tant Private Secretary to the First Lord of the Ad-
miralty. (Candidates mu"t apniv before the SOth
September. No applications received^ a^er this
date will be entertained. Application should not
be made until the candidate has reached the ago of
sixteen.
4. O^eexamination for Paymaster Cadetships will
beheld annually— in December— under the direction
of the Civil Service Commissioners (address —
Burlington Gardens, London, W.).
Candidates will be required to pay a fee of 11. 10'.
to the Civil Service Commissioners before the Edu-
cational Examination.
The Civil Service Commissioners will deal with all
questions connected with such Examination, and
will announce the results.
Except as stated below no candidate will he
eligible for examination who is under IT or over 18
years of age on the 15th .January following. As
"proof of the candidate's onglblUty in point of ago,
a Registrar's Certificate of Birth m ust be produced.
A certificate of baptism alone will not be accepted.
Candidates will be allowed a deduction from
iwtiMl age in respect of militani service rendered in
H M. Forces (Na^'al. Militani cr Air) duriim the war.

6. The number of Paymaster Cadets to be entered
at each examination will be regulated by the
requirements of the Service.
6. A candidate must be of pure European descent
and the son either—
(1) of natural born British Hubjects, or
(2) of parents naturalised in tlie United Kingdom.
If any doubt arises npou this question the burden
of clear proof that he is qualified will rest upon the
candiditte hlmaelf.
